Bright cosmic background, universe, stars and star systems, planets

I am not an expert on the topic, but I believe scientists posit that the universe is infinite, with galaxies that stretch far beyond our solar system and stars that are billions of light-years away. The topic on which I am an expert in Microsoft’s Dynamics ERP solutions. And while they are not infinite, they are vast and far-reaching in their capabilities to meet the needs of every business under the sun.

I would group the Microsoft Dynamics ERPs into two (2) categories: Pre-Microsoft Dynamics 365 and Post-Microsoft Dynamics 365.

Pre-Microsoft Dynamics 365

In 2001 and 2002, having scoured the world to find the best ERP software development companies that money could buy, Microsoft bought four prominent ERP enterprises: Great Plains, Solomon, Navision, and Axapta. This quartet became the Microsoft Dynamics family of ERP products and was rebranded accordingly under that umbrella as Microsoft Dynamics GP, Microsoft Dynamics SL, Microsoft Dynamics NAV, and Microsoft Dynamics AX.

Each of those four (4) solutions presented somewhat different profiles.

If I were to paint them with a broad brush, I would say Dynamics GP had the most extensive reach because it was – and still is – a midmarket solution that could handle companies’ essential needs in most industry sectors. Dynamics SL was – and still is – the best choice for project-based companies with unique requirements in revenue recognition areas. Dynamics NAV had a more significant presence in Europe due to Navision’s popularity on that continent. And Dynamics AX ruled the enterprise world of sprawling multinational concerns looking for the Microsoft high-end equivalent of SAP or Oracle.

It might be said that Microsoft made a late entrance into these markets since the term ERP for Enterprise Resource Planning was first used in the early 1990s, and Microsoft only entered that market in 2001. Therefore, it might also be said that Strategic Systems Group (SSG) was an ERP technology leader since we have been implementing ERP systems since 1991, ten (10) years before Microsoft!

Be that as it may, we wholeheartedly embraced all four (4) of the “pre-Microsoft Dynamics 365” solutions. All four (4) were excellent, solid, reliable products even in their early iterations. But Microsoft poured billions into enhancing these solutions until they were all widely viewed as top-notch in every way for the markets they served.

And that, friends, is why Strategic Systems Group (SSG) continues to serve AX, GP, NAV, and SL customers even though, to some extent, all four (4) have been eclipsed by the newer, cloud-based editions of Dynamics 365. Let us look at each solution with a very brief overview of the services provided by Strategic Systems Group (SSG) to customers running each product.

Post-Microsoft Dynamics 365

Microsoft’s much-heralded native cloud ERP solution, Dynamics 365, was launched in 2016 and since then has spawned numerous versions to meet the specific needs of various user groups. Think of it as a parent, namely Microsoft Dynamics 365, with many children:  Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, Microsoft Dynamics Business Central for Field Service, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central with Power BI, Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance, Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations, and Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Supply Chain Management.

If I were to paint these “children” with a broad brush, I would need to explain that the Business Central versions of the Microsoft Dynamics 365 “parent” are all intended to serve midmarket companies. And I would have to explain further that Microsoft defines midmarket as companies with annual revenues of $5 million to $500 million. Strategic Systems Group (SSG) supports all of these “children” who were born in and designed to thrive in the cloud. Let us look at each solution with a very brief overview of the services provided by Strategic Systems Group (SSG) to customers running each product.
