Once upon a time, Microsoft was not even in the ERP software business. They did Windows and Outlook, in other words, desktop applications. But Microsoft had their eyes wide open and they saw that business management software for finance and operations was a growing industry.

Perhaps Microsoft thought about creating their own ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) software. We don’t know what was discussed behind closed doors. But history tells us that they decided to purchase going concerns, companies that were already in the marketplace.

So in 2001 and 2002, having scoured the world to find the best ERP software development companies that money could buy, Microsoft bought four prominent ERP enterprises: Great Plains, Solomon, Navision, and Axapta. This quartet became the Microsoft Dynamics family of products: dynamics GP. Dynamics SL, Dynamics NAV, and Dynamics AX.

Then Microsoft poured R&D dollars into all four solutions, improving them and expanding their capabilities and functionality. The Dynamics family became a force to be reckoned with in the business world. But Microsoft, a company that is always forward-thinking and not one to rest on its laurels, came out with pure cloud ERP software solutions: Microsoft Dynamics 365 (based the higher end AX product) and Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central (based on the midmarket NAV product).

Here’s how Strategic Systems Group (SSG) fits in.

As a company focused exclusively on manufacturing ERP software, we evaluated the options that Microsoft offered and moved forward with 5 of them. For SSG and our manufacturing clients, these are the five faces of Microsoft Dynamics manufacturing ERP software:
