Legacy – Dynamics AX (Axapta), GP (Great Plains), SL (Solomon) and NAV (Navision)

New – Dynamics 365

Old/New Terminology

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) Software –  > Now termed Business Application Software

Common Data Model(Service) – The data from business applications are typically housed in many data silos. Data is critical to running business operations.  This made reporting and development projects challenging.

The common data model brings all of your business applications data(Think Sales, Marketing, Operations, Email, and Calendaring) into one source of the truth.  This allows for much easier reporting and business analytics as all of your business application data is in one database that is always current.  It also makes the work of developers easier with one source of the truth.  This is core functionality in Dynamics 365 and other Microsoft business application suites.

Power Apps – is software to build custom business applications without the knowledge of app development or custom coding. It is included in most Dynamics and Office 365 subscriptions plans.

Microsoft Flow – is a cloud-based software tool that allows employees to create and automate workflows across multiple applications and services without the need for developer help.  It is included in most Dynamics and Office 365 subscriptions plans.

Power BI – Power BI is a business analytics solution that lets you visualize your data and share insights across your organization, or embed them in your app or website. Connect to hundreds of data sources and bring your data to life with live dashboards and reports.  It is included in most Dynamics and Office 365 subscriptions plans.

What is Dynamics 365?

Dynamics 365 is the unification of Dynamics ERP and CRM applications into one unified intelligent cloud solution with a common data model.  It has a unique value proposition as there is no other vendor that brings all of this functionality on to one platform.

Dynamics 365 is divided into two products:

  1. Dynamics 365 Business Central
  2. Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations

Both products are fully functioning and cover all needed business functionality:

  1. Financials
  2. Supply Chain
  3. Services – Project-based and Field Service based
  4. Manufacturing
  5. Payroll & HR
  6. Customer Relationship Management

It also includes:

  1. PowerBI
  2. PowerApps
  3. Microsoft Flow

What is going to happen with Dynamics legacy applications (AX, GP, SL, NAV, CRM)? Is Microsoft going to discontinue support for my solution?

There is some buzz that Microsoft is going to drop support for their legacy applications and force users to D365.  The reality is that Microsoft has over 150,000 companies combined on those platforms.  Their history has always been to support their products for multiple years.  Immediately dropping support would go against that business practice.  What we are going to see?  All research and development investment is going into Dynamics 365 as it is their Flagship solution.  Microsoft will offer incentives for legacy customers to move to Dynamics 365(Current 40% Discount) and is offering data migration functionality.

Existing customers will most likely be able to run their current platforms for many more years.  If they want a cloud-based solution they will have to move to Dynamics 365.  All new opportunities should be sold Dynamics 365 and not the legacy applications.
